_  Girl! POWER for YOUR WORLD - Make your New Years Resolution Matter
2012, New Year, New YOU!  Not so fast…

Columnist: Dawniel Winningham

Happy 2012!  If you are like most people you are approaching this New Year as an opportunity to make some changes.  You are excited and hopeful about your opportunity to “do some things over”; well me too.  This New Year symbolizes an opportunity for us to shamelessly pursue our own purpose and greatness.

The good news is that people who make a resolution are 10 times more likely to achieve their goal.  Well we want to improve your chances even further. Below are some tips and tricks for making sure your New Year’s Resolutions sticks with you throughout the year.

After all, KNOWLEDGE is POWER, right?

Realistic Resolutions

Keep your resolutions realistic both in number and in level of expected accomplishment.  For example, making a resolution to lose 30 pounds in January is unrealistic.  Perhaps making a goal to lose 5 – 10 pounds in January is more achievable and would allow you to feel more powerful when you accomplish the goal!  Also setting too many large resolutions at once could get in your way.  If you plan to lose weight, find another job, move to another neighborhood, all at once you may be overwhelming yourself.  Keep the focus on one or two key resolutions and feel free to add more quarterly as you make the resolutions a part of your life.

From Wish to Resolution

Once you have determined which resolutions will be your focus commit them to paper.  Thinking about them in passing is equivalent to making a wish.  Not saying that wishes don’t come true, but we know that hard work often yields results.  Committing the Resolution to paper makes it more than just a wish.  It becomes a promise to YOU.  You can’t break your own promise now can you?

Plan for Obstacles

Even the best laid plans will encounter obstacles.  Be ready for them and have a plan B as they arise.  For example, if you have committed to lose weight in January, but you know you have a special event (that involved food) in that same month, you may want to make that your reward day, or provide some other alternative for that day.  If you fail to plan, you definitely plan to fail.

Visualize Success

As you start your resolution spend at least 15 – 30 minutes a day thinking about the results of your success and encouraging yourself to keep going!  After all, if you say you CAN or you say you Can’t, either way you are RIGHT!

Spread the Word

Share your resolutions with those closest to you in order for them to provide the support you need.  If you tell your support circle that you have a resolution to lose weight, then perhaps they will invite you to more active outings, and help you to not plan outings around food; something I personally am very guilty of.

Fail Forward

Most importantly know this.  It is not that you fall that is important.  When we learned to walk we fell down many times.  We got up.  We tried again.  Eventually we got it right!  That is what resolutions are about.  It is not that you fail.  It is more important that you get up, learn what works, and keep trying.

Here’s a toast to a healthier, wealthier, and wiser YOU for the New Year!  I believe this is the year for you to accomplish greatness.  Please join ME in believing in YOU!

IN PURSUIT OF YOUR PURPOSE
Columnist: Dawniel Winningham

Romans 8:28

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.

I won’t lie.  I used to be jealous of women who worked from home, and those women who were doing what they loved to do!  Now I am on the other side of the river, doing what I love to do!  Please don’t be mad at me, I am here to help you get there too!

Don’t get me wrong…I still go to work at a 9 – 5 every day.  The only difference is that now I have uncovered my purpose and I am living it.  The 9 – 5 pays those bills that still exists in spite of being called to a purpose.

There are many reasons you should walk in your purpose.  There is a saying that when you love what you do; you never work a day in your life.  SO TRUE!  Besides, you can’t take your destiny with you.  Don’t be the person wishing you had did things differently when it is too late.  Act NOW!

Admittedly, getting started is the hardest part.  First you have to figure out WHAT your purpose is.  It should be a combination of what you are good at, what you like to do, and what people will pay you for.  (Just because it is your purpose doesn’t mean you work for free now, let’s keep it real).

Once you figure out your purpose GO.  Don’t wait for the wind to blow in a certain direction; don’t wait for the sun to set just right.  Don’t even tell a lot of people.  Actions speak MUCH louder than words.  GET GOING. Believe in yourself and your purpose, even as you believe in GOD’s ability to fulfill your destiny. Finally look around you for the resources that you can use to be successful.  If you don’t have them, then start working to build them.

Sounds easy huh?  Well it is.  After all, fulfilling your purpose and walking on the path that God set out for you will make your journey a blessed one from the start.  When you are doing what you are meant to do you will find that doors open up for you, when once there were no doors.  God will bless your path and what you need will be presented to you.  But first you MUST SEEK YOUR purpose.  Your pursuit starts NOW!  Ask the LORD to guide your heart and your steps and it shall be done.

Matthew 7:7

Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.

PURPOSEFULLY YOURS,
DAWNIELLE

WHY GIRL POWER!!!!!

Why GIRL! Power

Jeremiah 29:11

“For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.”

Of all of the books that I could have written, some may ask Why Girl! Power?

As I searched my soul for what I really wanted to do with this life that God granted me, it occurred to me to do what I am best at and what I love most.  I am best when I am in service to women.  Nothing against men, it’s just that since I am a woman, it kind of makes me an expert!  Also in my day to day role as a performance coach for a fortune 100 firm it is my job to help people be their best day after day.  It just so happens that 90% of the people I coach are women.  Because of this, I am able to leverage my own life experience as well as those of other women I know to help women sort through being better not only personally, but professionally as well.

As part of my legacy, and as an offering to the women of the world, my next step was to capture my experience (and advice) on paper.  Much of what I share is the learning’s of my Big Mama, Aunts, and other women I have been blessed to have touch my life. And of course my own struggles as I weave my way through this maze we call life. I leave this legacy to my twin daughters, and to the other daughters, the mothers, the sisters, and the friends in the world who need someone to tell them how much they are loved, and how truly powerful they are when we unite!

Girl! Power is for women of all ages, races, and walks of life.  When we, as women, band together, there is not much that we can not accomplish!!!!

Please tune in each month as I share with you steps to pursue your dreams and to live up to your true Girl! Power potential.  Until then, make sure you love, because I do.

Proverbs 31:30
“Charm is deceptive, and beauty does not last; but a woman who fears the Lord will be greatly praised.”

The Invisible Life

Picture
I have often heard it said that when opportunity meets preparation you have a winning combination for success.  So often I meet people who seem to be ambitious and have high hopes and dreams for their lives, but they have done very little preparation on themselves.  It saddens me to think that someday they will meet up with an opportunity, but it will pass them by because they aren’t prepared.

What goes into preparing yourself to walk into your destiny – your dream job or that big break you have been hoping for?  The answer may shock most people because they tend to think that if they work on the outer things (appearance, a fancy office, professional business cards, and the right domain name for their website); they are ready to meet up with destiny.  Yes, those things are key parts of being prepared for success, however; the most important area of all is the proper MINDSET.  Believe it or not, there is an invisible force running the show in your life and unless you get acquainted and deal with it you will not experience the kind of success you desire.  Your beliefs, philosophies, and self-talk play a very important role in preparing you to receive the things you have been saying you want in your life.  A mind that has not been properly trained, programmed and wiped clear of negative influences and thoughts will lead you to eventually sabotage your own success.  Negative self-talk can cause stress, anxiety and poor mental health.  Most people keep a mental conversation going in their head at all times, but don’t even know it.

Perhaps you are familiar with some of the following statements:

-          I can’t apply for that position because I don’t have ____.

-          My family never had a lot of money so why should I?

-          I wish I had (hair, skin, etc…) like ____.

-          Why do I always get passed over for promotions or opportunities?

-          Maybe if I would ___ I could ____.

I’m sure you can add to the list and insert your own words, but as you can see there are many negative beliefs floating around and some are common to the human race.

Does simply having a positive mental attitude create lasting change?  Absolutely not any more than putting a pile of snow on the ground in the summer will change the season to winter.  Not only do you have to address the mental attitude, the underlying beliefs which drive those negative attitudes must be changed.  You brain is a complex computer filled with every memory and experience that has ever happened in your life.  Every event in your life and every word spoken is filtered through your personal belief system.  Not only does your brain store memories, it also stores the beliefs attached to those memories.  If you were teased because of your hair or skin color as a child, you may have formed a negative self-image.  Perhaps your household was one where family members didn’t discuss issues openly and you formed a belief that it is best to hold your thoughts and feelings inside.  Messages about success, failure, money, body image, and identity are all formed at an early age and can affect how you move forward in your everyday life.

So how do you go about addressing your inner chatter?  How do you change the philosophies that are driving you to behave the way you do?  You must do a mental inventory by taking note of the areas where you continue to struggle in life.  Trace your behavior back as far as you can remember.  When did you being to struggle in that area and what belief did you form as a result of the event?  Was your belief true or was it something you told yourself because you didn’t know any better?  Have you allowed another person or a past trauma to define you and cause you to feel a certain way about yourself?  People who have escaped abusive relationships often struggle in this area because they were verbally abused as well.  If the message was, “I am ugly and worthless and will never be good enough for anyone” you can affirm your worth by restating every day that you are fearfully and wonderfully made.  You have a very high value and can contribute to the world in a positive way.

Finally, if you cannot seem to break through those negative thought patterns, don’t be ashamed to seek professional help.  Often people suffer in silence while giving the appearance that everything is going great on the outside.   Please be patient with yourself while you work on changing your negative belief system.  Remember, you did not get that way overnight and you won’t change overnight.  It takes time, patience, and a belief that you can and will change in time.  Envision yourself with no more negative strings holding you back from accomplishing your dreams and goals.  Look at the long term picture and see that many people have had to overcome the same struggles you are facing.  If you truly count the cost of having missed opportunities in your life because of a negative mindset, you may find that the price of missing out on fulfilling your dreams is too high.

I’ll see you at the top!

THE BEST YOU!!!

Hello Empowered readers!  I’m excited to be a part of something so fresh and cutting edge.  I spend more time with technology than I care to admit because I am fascinated with all things digital.  In my other life, I am a business woman and I meet lots of fascinating and interesting people on a daily basis.  Most of them look like you and me, hold regular jobs, and love their families.  Out of the ranks, there are those who set themselves apart from the rest.   Some of them have achieved or are on their way to massive success.  These individuals are doctors, writers, CEOs, and professionals from all walks of life.  I can assure you that hard work and preparation probably played a role in their success, however; personal development is a major part of that equation.

Personal development is that key element of business and personal success that makes a good singer an excellent vocalist.  It can take a successful business owner from breaking even to making a seven figure income.  Through personal development a budding writer now becomes a best-selling novelist.  When you look at someone like Oprah Winfrey who had very humble beginnings as a child born to a teenage mother and raised by her grandmother, you have to ask…what made the difference in her life?  Was it skill, luck, hard work or all of the above?  The bottom line is that people who achieve high levels of success work very hard on themselves and they pay attention the things successful people do in order to achieve.

Most people are born with a certain temperament and set of talents.  Maximizing those things by working on yourself can set you apart in ways that you can only imagine.  This can be applied to the stay-at-home mom who really wants to make a difference in her children’s lives.  It can also happen for the retiree who wants to do more than collect a retirement income and wait for old age to take effect.  At any stage of life, you can begin a journey towards personal development.  So, you’ve heard the theory but let’s talk about practical application.  What are some key elements of personal development?

1)      Personal development addresses all aspects of human development.
I like to think of it as a spirit, soul and body process.  The person who is focused on their total development in all of these areas would do activities such as: pray or meditate, read enriching books, develop a sound exercise and healthy eating plan, take a class on organizational skills, etc.  Personal development could also include activities such as traveling abroad, learning a new language or taking a cooking class.  Any positive activity that adds value to you as a person on a spiritual, physical or mental level is considered personal development.

2)      Personal development should occur at all stages of life.

Let’s look at a high school senior who is about to go out into the world and get their first job.  On the surface, this person (we will use “he” for this illustration) is just a typical teenager who has no idea what life will look like 5, 10 or 15 years from now.  However, he can take steps to steer his life in a positive direction by learning to focus on areas which will help him grow as an individual.  Meeting new people and learning to communicate effectively will boost his social skills.  Getting his first job at McDonalds will teach him responsibility and the importance of hard work.  Adding a dash of personal development would include reading a book about Ray Croc, the businessman who took over the McDonalds franchise, in order to learn how he achieved success in the fast food industry.

3)      Personal development is just that – PERSONAL.
So many people start out on a path to improve themselves with other people in mind.  Change is about your desire to become a better YOU - to maximize your impact in the world.  If you start out looking at how your positive change will please others, it can only lead to discouragement; so keep the focus on you.

4)      Personal development can be fun!  Keep in mind that your journey through personal development is an adventure, so make it fun.  If you are not an avid reader, download audio books on your smartphone or device.  Make your car a drive-time university by playing your personal development material while you’re on the road.  There are so many books written by some of the giants in the area of personal development such as Zig Ziglar, Napoleon Hill, Stephen Covey and many more.  Look for titles on leadership, time-management, communication and similar topics.

5)      Finally, personal development must be intentional.
Be aware that you are developing personally on a daily basis but it must be intentional and focused to make a difference.  Make it a goal to read 10 pages of an enriching book every night or to complete at least one self improvement course at the local Junior College per year.  I use this illustration: if you sit in a room with a heater you may get warm eventually.  But if you sit near a heater in front of the vent with a blanket on, you will get warm more efficiently.  The goal is warmth, the method determines how quickly and effective your efforts will be.

I encourage you to stay focused in your approach to personal development and eventually you will become a person that others can model in business and in life.

I’ll see you at the top!
